Dean Hoyle's first problem is he doesn't seem very good at choosing managers. They are all (those I can recall) dour types lacking in enthusiasm and seemingly little ability to actually galvanise the team into a cohesive unit. Even moderately successful Lee Clarke sounded like he needed to talk to the Samaritans after a WIN.
Consider how enthusiastic pundits like Chris Kamara are about their work - now he's motivating. Powell is more like a wet blanket- how is that supposed to inspire confidence in a team to get out there and WIN?
How can Powell not have noticed he's got a crap defence? If the academy players are worth keeping they need to be given a proper chance - can they really do any worse than the existing defenders? - if not, then sell them, loan them out or get them off the books. What is needed from the manager is visible passion, organisation, good team selection, a decent game plan that can be varied if things don't go to well. Powell's new recruits don't seem to help either in building Hoyle's confidence.
Yes, Town DO need goalscorers, but the defence seems to be the weakest link and solid defenders are comparatively cheap compared to proven goalscorers. So he needs to get a couple of young, quick and effective defenders.
Powell appears to be yet another manager without much idea and until he is replaced, I doubt things will improve or the purse strings loosened to any great extent. Sadly, ex-footballers often seem to make pretty lousy managers, many treating it as an opportunity to keep on raking the cash in. There is a constant manager merry-go-round where failures go to a new club and fail again.
