Simple question, what's the plan, where do we go from here and can we afford not to invest?
So first up, what's the plan. Well the plan was to stick within the FFP rules, buy young hungry players and sell on for a profit. Invest in the academy and bring players through the system
Ok so we seem to be the only club that's stuck by FFP so far, every other club has either broken the rules or are in the process of doing so.
Buy young and sell for a profit. Connor Cody being the latest example(although sold too cheap IMO) that's worked a few times for us in the past but finding these hidden gems is getting harder and harder.
So onto the last Academy, Alex Smithies....that's it. The academy is failing, it's not producing. They win nearly every game and have done for the past 3 years, the same with the "Development" squad but we see precious little of these players coming through.
Can we afford to go on like this and not invest in quality players? In my opinion No! If Dean doesn't loosen the purse strings a little then relegation could end up losing him a lot more money than he is now. Gate revenue will drop, TV revenue will drop like a stone and the knock on impact will be less commercial income, less people through the gates equals less taken through things like club shops and Canalside. He needs to give Powell some money to strengthen the 1st team, as a starting XI at the weekend we were only really missing Vaughan and Scannell and we were struggling to replace them(Smith and Miller and a reshuffle of formation) the fact we have Adam Hammill coming on trying to save the day despite the manager basically saying his days are numbered speaks volumes about our weak squad.
So come on Dean give Powell half a chance to improve this team and give him some cash to work with.
