The media have taken this and made a mountain out of it.  Probably because he was already surrounded by controversy with the whole poppy thing, thus making him an easy target.

And look - they've got EXACTLY what they wanted.  

Would like to point out that the following picture is slowly doing the rounds -  the story I've heard is that he bowed his head, said a catholic prayer to himself, then stood with his team mates.
