He's entitled to his opinion just like everyone else is. People who gave him this abuse wouldn't say it to his face because there keyboard trolls who sit in there bedrooms hiding behind a keyboard.

Totally true but I think he was always going to put himself in an awkward position given that he's primarily identified as a British player. There will undoubtedly be tennis fans out there who will now refuse to support him or will even turn against him because of this. I think too many people feel the need to nail their political colours to the mast (though this doesn't just apply to celebrities).
