I'm not sure he's the answer. The problems we are suffering at the playing level are basically a natural stagnation of the tactics he set out the last time he was here. McDowall is merely implementing the same blinkered outlook that McCoist learnt from Smith, yet without the quality of player to make it anywhere near a success.
If Smith were to come in, would he be able to tackle the core problems we have? The lack of pace in centre of defence (with the various knock-on effects that has on our midfield and links to our front line), the core lack of fitness and pace and the lack of confidence our management team has shown in flair players over more defensive-minded (yet out-of-position) journeymen?
Now, I'm sure Walter can recognise the problems we have. I'm just not at all convinced he'd be inclined to drop McCulloch, Foster, Black, Boyd or Miller to try to fix them.
IMO we need a clean sweep, flush out the 'old guard' and start from scratch. Formulate a playing style around the players we have, rather than forcing square pegs into round holes just to shackle the players to a stubbornly-adhered-to fatally flawed formation.
But yeah, what do I know? Put your money on Smith's appointment before the end of the week.
