This morning the Albion ambassador in London handed the Football Association a final note stating that unless we heard from them by 11 o'clock that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland and/or deduct a bajillion points from Leicester, a state of war would exist between us and relegation. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that consequently this club is up shit creek.

You can imagine what a bitter blow it is to Mr Ramsay that all his long struggle to secure survival has failed. Yet I cannot believe that there is anything more or anything different that he could have done that would have been more successful, except for literally everything from day one.

I would say to you now that I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering and of going to Small Heath on a Tuesday night. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: it is to wage war by sea, land and air (but mostly land, unless Norwich ends up underwater), with all our might; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. Against having to play Port Vale ever again.

That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: it is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. Let us take up the task with buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail (unless, of course, it does). And so I say, "come then, let us go forward together with our united strength."

To victory!
