We started well and scored, but after that it was one way traffic with Birmingham bossing it. Our midfield didn't have the legs and we were totally overran.

Of course we did have a few chances to put the game to bed on the break, unfortunately we just don't have the quality with our passing to make those chances count. You need some calmness and compose in those situations and the ball is a bit like a hot potato with our attacking midfielders. You can't really fault the amount of running they do, but there isn't any quality on the ball with Grant and Price. First touch, passing, it just goes anywhere.

On the plus side, I thought there were some good performances today...

I thought Heggebo's hold up play was excellent. I don't remember him misplacing a pass. All of his layoffs were perfectly weighted. It's just unfortunate that the lads he's laying it off to can't do the same.

I thought the two centre halves defended as well as I've seen them, especially when you consider we were totally overran for the bulk of the game and they had far too much to do.

Our midfield was totally off it. Didn't have the legs to get close to Blues. Didn't have the quality going forward. I know I'm going to get some slack for this, but I think Issac Price is absolutely useless. I don't understand what Mason sees in him. I can only assume he must have the best running data or something. I just can't see how he's picked in front of Illing-Junior or another forward, especially as he's constantly going in behind and never showing for a pass. When midfielders don't show, it's no wonder the defence are forced into hoofball.

To be fair to Mason, he was unfortunate with Collyer's injury tonight. We started well and Collyer was pressing high and getting around the Blues players. But when he went off, we just know that as a duo Mowatt and Diakite don't have the legs to press.

To be fair, Slick, I don’t think Price is useless and I feel we saw evidence of a good player earlier in the season. However, I do think he’s gone completely off the boil, is adding little or nothing at present (apt from the excellent cross for Heggebo’s winner v Oxford) and should be left out. Unfortunately Mason seems to regard certain players undroppable; with Collyer’s injury, could it be Tammer Bany’s moment?

Your assessment of Price is probably fairer than mine. I tend to react a bit more harshly soon after the game Big Grin

I think I'm just frustrated that he seems untouchable when Johnston and Illing-Junior are rotated on the bench. I think both of them offer more than Price when we're going forward and I'd like to see them play together.

Price's goal record for club and country shows he has something to offer. I'm just not sure, even after all this time, what his actual position is. Despite his goal return, I don't see him as a number 10 because he doesn't pick up the right positions or have any vision or skill from what I've seen. I think him constantly running in behind is one of the reasons we often can't pass through midfield.

Yesterday, at one point, he picked up the ball deep in our half and pinged a hell of a cross field ball to Johnston. It must've been 50 yards. Yet when he has the ball at his feet high up the pitch, his passing seems sloppy and rushed. It makes me wonder if he should be playing deeper, facing the play rather than so playing so high up the pitch with his back to goal. It would also enable him to arrive late in the box, something which he did well against Wrexham, and shoot from distance. The lad has a hell of a shot on him and seems more reliable from long-range than when he gets into the box.

It's just really frustrating that Mason will not either drop him or try him in another position.

With Collyer's injury, it would make sense to drop Price back next to Mowatt and introduce either Bany, Illing-Junior or Dike for the Swansea game. After all, surely we don't need two stoppers for that game. But I suspect it will be the same lineup or he'll bring in Illing-Junior for one of the wingers. He doesn't seem to fancy Bany and must see something in Price at number 10 that I'm not seeing.
