Big up to Tommy Fleetwood
for finally getting that 'Best of the Rest' tag off his bag, winning on his 164th Professional US Tour tournament start with three strokes to spare at the FedexCup Tour Championship on Sunday. Fleetwood had a record-setting 30 top-five finishes and 44 top-10 finishes on tour without a win, until yesterday. He held off Americans, Patrick Cantlay and Russell Hendley.
The British Masters at The Belfry was won by Swede, Alex Noren by a stroke from Dane, Nicolai Højgaard and New Zealander Kazuma Kobori. Højgaard's brother, Rasmus, in finishing tied 13th did enough to take the 6th automatic spot in Europe's Ryder Cup squad alongside Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tomy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Tyrrell Hatton. Luke Donald names the other 6 on September 1st.
The Ladies Egg Chasing got off to a high attendance and high scoring start, with big wins for England, Australia, Scotland, Canada, France, Ireland, South Africa and New Zealand. Early round games are spread between York Community Stadium, Franklin Gardens, Northampton, Salford Community Stadium and Sandy Park, Exeter. Often two games are played the same day at these stadiums (stadia?) or on consecutive days. Larger stadiums such as Brighton, and Ashton Gate, Bristol are being used for games expected to draw larger crowds such as England v Aus, New Zealand v Ireland and semi-final matches. The final and third place play-off are at Twickers, where the World Record crowd at Sunderland on Friday will be knocked into a cocked hat.
The Tennis is up and running in New York with the all usual fuss about British players in the early rounds. This is the first time they've started on Sunday, which somewhat explains why I got the day wrong. My excuse, I'm sticking to it.
Did anyone mention Town won and Leeds lost? Just in case you missed it.
