Seconds out, round 2

The 2nd round of the Caribooboo sees us take on Regis Le Bris' Sunderland mob.
No doubt, having achieved promotion to the League of the Entitled, they'll think they're the Black Cats who got the cream. It's up to us to bring them down a peg or two.
As I write this on Saturday, they're 7th in the aforementioned Big Knobs League and we're 2nd in Lil Ol' League One. This, of course, is their entry into the competition. We came through Round 1 relatively unscathed, despite the penalty shoot out against the Foxes. Don't mess with the Terriers in a penalty shoot out.

Will Lee Connell (or Lee Nicholls as you like to call him) start in goal again?
Did I hear you ask "who is Regis Le Bris?"
Well, he's a former defender, born in Pont-L'Abbe (just a wild guess but I'd say there's a bridge and an abbey), France. He played in Rennes, Laval, and Ronse in France. He then managed Lorient (not Leyton Orient as I first read it
) in France. Then he was appointed by Sunderland in 2024. Who'd take on an unknown entity from a foreign land?

Here he is auditioning for a role in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream or All's Well That Ends Well. Hopefully, it won't be a dream and it won't end well.

As far as the League Cup goes, they were runners-up in 1985 and 2014.
However, it deserves a mention that they have won the FA Cup twice; the 2nd time in 1973. This being good because they beat our friends, Leeds Urinals. Have I told you before that the headmaster at my school got us to make Huddersfield Town rosettes for the final?

Head to Head

As you see, we're 4-1 up in League Cup ties.
The first meeting in 1991/92, we beat them 6-1 on aggregate over 2 legs.
in 1992/92, we drew 3-3 on aggregate but went through on the away goals rule.
By the last meeting in 2003, it was played over 1 leg at the Stadium of Light and we won 4-2.
So... we have knocked them out 3 times and each time they were in a higher division.

Although American by birth, Lynden Gooch having played with the Santa Cruz County Breakers Academy, he was spotted by Sunderland. From 10 years old, he was travelling to train with them in the summer holidays. At 16, he got a scholarship with them and by 2015 he had a contract. He did have loan spells in 2015 and 2016 but remained with Sunderland until 2023, joining Stoke and then us two years later. This would explain his comment to Connell (Nicholls) after the Leicester tie that he can go home now. He would look at it as home having been there for 11 years plus some before that. He helped them gain promotion to the Championship.
