We have got new players in and slipped down the league, while Valencia have climbed from relegation fodder into almost a European qualification spot.
The league doesn't lie.
I think it's unfair to compare the two, doing very different jobs with different clubs.
I think we all agree that Corberan is an excellent coach who for best part, did a great job with us under difficult circumstances. Taking us from relegation to playoffs in 2 years was a real achievement. Likewise, he's done a great job for Valencia. Although I do think that improving them was potentially an easier job than Mowbray's job here. Valencia were massively under achieving when Carlos joined and their squad is much better than their relegation rivals - Alaves, Valladolid, Leganes and the like.
In terms of Mowbray getting new players, that is true, but I think it's fair to be balanced we have to recognise the outgoings too.
We've signed Price, Bany, Lankshear and Armstrong.
And lost Palmer, Racic and Dobbin. Importantly, Josh Maja has been injured for almost all of Mowbray's tenure too.
Obviously it's open to debate, but I really do not think we're a stronger squad now...
Lankshear and Bany were both clearly "punts". The former had only played 3 pro games and the latter didn't even have a wikipedia page.
Maja remains one of the top scorers in the league which shows the impact he had when fit. And I'm really not sure why we let Racic leave either. Yes, his performances were hit and miss but I thought he showed glimpses of quality and was box-to-box, which we're missing. It's strange that he's managed to play and score goals for Braga, one of the top teams in Portugal, yet he couldn't get a run for us.
Don't get me wrong, I've been thoroughly disappointed with Mowbray's reign. I thought he would get us playing better football, that hasn't happened. I thought he would get the best out of Johnston and Fellows, yet they've been in and out of the team. Armstrong was a statement signing and clearly his man, but he doesn't appear he had any idea how to fit him into a system that suits him.
Most importantly, I thought we would at least play with some style, yet we remain dull as dishwater.
But I think it's unbalanced to not take into account the poor card he's been dealt too. I mean Palmer's sale has undoubtedly cost us a few points and would've whoever was in charge.
Given our lack of "footballers" it's fair to say that Mowbray might not have been the right man for the job. I think Corberan's more attractional style definitely got more out of our dull team. I'm not sure a team full of "ratters" like Styles, Molumby and Grant really suits Mowbray's style at all. But maybe with the right rebuild, he could come good.
For me the jury is still out, but I do understand why you and others are calling for his head.
That's a great, balanced view Slick. A lot of sense..... I'm never going to criticise CC as he DID do wonders here..... BUT dull, dull, dull (as is 95% of modern football); I had hoped TM would somehow 'magic' a completely new style of play with basically the same squad.
D'OH!!
With hindsight, I now think keeping TM on for at least another 6 months is the better option, to give him a fair chance in a league that he HAS had some success in.
