We started getting f'ucked over after the Liverpool fans decided to get in for free (oh, and they will get their replay of the Spurs game after they've moaned enough 
but we won't get to play the Plymouth game again). This was made worse by Alcock's diving antics. The problem now is that it's so ingrained into officialdom that most of them don't even know why they are doing it 
It's just the norm for this generation of referee's.
It's a bit like fans singing Hark now, blah-de-blah-boxing day, most of them weren't alive in 1979 but they sing it anyway because that's what you do
