Most transfer deadline days in recent years have been disappointing...
But this year my expectations are zero, so it's pretty much impossible for me to be disappointed, whatever the outcome.
I suppose that's the one positive about our dyer financial situation...
I expect us to sell everyone that we can get a bit of cash for, and replace with anyone we pick up for nothing. Just so we're able to field a side.
I don't expect us to be able to pick and choose who comes in. I think we'll be left with players nobody else wants. Corberan will be tasked with performing a miracle to get us into the playoffs.
The strange thing is, I'd typically be gutted at the prospect of selling our "top" players and replacing with freebies. But with our current squad, I'm not really endeared to anyone except for Okay Yokuslu and Grady Diangana. And in the case of the latter, it's for his exploits years ago. I could see sense selling him given his performances in the last 2 years and his injury record.
I do think fans would kick off if we sold BTA to Stoke. Firstly, he's a likeable character who works hard. Secondly, it would make a mockery of the club if we sold a fan favourite to Stoke of all teams. That said, I'm still not convinced he's able to lead the line on his own at this level and see him as more of a good League 1 player. I can't imagine he'd be the man to fire Stoke (or anyone else at this level) to promotion. However, if he did go, the club would have to replace him with someone to excite the fans. That's the one deal which would need serious appeasement.
The sad thing is, if anyone is sold for cash, we know the money will just disappear into paying off debts and the Chinese "black hole". Nothing will be reinvested into the playing side. I think today will consist of us calling every club we can just to see if there's anyone they need to loan out to get them off their wage bill.
