And just like that another season comes to an end...
Obviously I wanted us to make the playoffs, but didn't fancy us given the circumstances going into this game so not overly disappointed. Firstly, we needed too much help from other teams. Secondly, I wasn't sure we had it in us to win at Swansea given our away record. As it happened, we had a good go, but fell short on quality at both ends of the pitch yet again.
Unfortunately I'm not as positive about the forthcoming years as some of the other Albion fans...
As others have said, we need a serious rebuild. We have a very mediocre, aging squad. We have a plethora of deadwood that needs to be moved on and replaced. In short, the mediocrity of the last 2 years is a result of years of piss poor transfer dealings catching up on us.
In Carlos Corberan we have a young manager who seems to know what he's doing. Although I've seen some fans questioning him during the recent dip in form, we have to remember that he inherited a side bottom of the league and transformed us. Our recent dip has coincided with an injury crisis. Realistically, I think he got the best out of the fairly mediocre tools at his disposal...
Had Ron Gourlay seen what we could all see - that Steve Bruce is useless - and got Carlos in earlier, we would've made the playoffs.
So I think most of us would agree, with him overseeing the rebuild we should be in good hands.
But will he be here?
He jumped ship from Huddersfield due to their mess and I'm not sure our situation is any better. Leeds will most likely be sniffing again should they be relegated.
And even if he does stay, can anyone rebuild our squad given the state of the club?
We have a bang average squad earning astronomical wages. We have players earning so much we will struggle to give them away. And even if we do, how can we replace them with no money?
It will not be like last season where we can outbid everyone for the "best" free agents. This year, there will be tons of sides with more cash.
We have very little in sellable assets, an owner who is bleeding the club dry, not much talent coming through the youth system...
Even if we do manage to sell anyone, how much will we be able to spend? I'll make a prediction... zilch.
Unless we get a new owner, I fear freefall.
