In the absence of some other sports programmes today, I'm filling the void with my Super Saturday Sports Splurge - well, just curling actually.
In the Fours Event, Scotland made the necessary adjustments to give themselves the chance of a medal. As feared, they were hammered 1-8 by Canada after only 6 ends, but made a great recovery later to defeat Norway 6-5. Afterwards they then suffered a huge reverses of 2-9 against China, losing 5 shots in the 7th end and 6-9 against bottom of the table Italy.
Amazngly, even with a record of 5 wins and 6 losses, they still qualified to contest the play-off games, solely because of their wins over the other teams on 5 wins - Norway and Czech Republic. Scotland then came to life in the first play-off game beating Korea by 6-2, seeing them into the Semi-final against Canada at 10pm tonight. Given their staggering level of inconsistency it might be difficult to see a win, but who would dare bet against them? The other Semi-final is China v Sweden.
Scotland also finished their games in the Mixed Doubles Event with a less than 50% record with 4 wins and 5 losses, just missing out on qualification by 1 win. Firstly they scraped through against Estonia by 10-9, scoring 3 shots in the last end, and trounced Switzerland 11-3 before losing narrowly to Finland by 6-7. Their campaign finished with excellent wins over United States by 6-1 and Poland by 9-8. They just started their good form too late for their own good.
England on the other hand continued on their merry way and although being defeated heavily 1-9 by Canada in their next game, they beat Germany 8-6 and then Denmark by the same score, to qualify in 3rd place with 6 wins out of 8. They now play United States in the Play-off Game at 5pm tonight, with the Semi-finals for the winners at 3am tomorrow. Given the standard of their play so far, there is no reason why they can't progress further.
