We had a bloke where I worked in L666s that did that. When I mentioned it over in Canada, probably after accidentally pulling on a black sock and a navy one in the morning gloom, the girlfriend's daughters thought it was a great idea and adopted it immediately. They'd never heard of punk. I think one of them still does it and she's now in her 30's. 
Meanwhile, tucked away in the darkest recess of Snoots's sock drawer, glowing away in the gloamin' like those old radioactive "fluorescent" watches they used to sell ......
My old Chemistry teacher put the school Geiger Counter on his watch and immediately dumped it in his Chemistry Lab front bench drawer, never to wear it again.
