Er, they are "nationalised" to all intents and purposes - all the ticket money goes to the Government, they pay the clowns that run the franchises on their behalf cost +10%. There's no incentive for them to actually run a train anymore, hence Avant-a-clue-i don't. The fewer trains that run, the fewer passengers that travel, the less money goes to Government. Meanwhile we subsidise just about every national rail company in Europe as they own all our "franchises" or significant chunks of them between them. What was that about taking back control again?
