I said when calling for Bruce's head that we needed to revert back to the simple things. 4 at the back with players in their proper positions. 2 stoppers sat in front of the defence, giving the attacking players a platform to build from. Building the team around our better players. Credit to Corberan for very quickly seeing those things and getting his selections close to bang on...
7 wins from 9 is a fantastic record... Especially when you consider he lost his first game copying Bruce's garbage selection of 5 at the back, with our best player Okay Yokuslu warming the bench. Since implementing the changes and picking his own team, we've won 7 from 8. Exceptional, especially when you consider we've had no fit centre halves etc.
I'm typically quite a negative poster who demands perfection. But for the first time in a long time, I actually feel like we have a manager in charge who knows what he's doing. His formation, selections, subs all seem to make sense. And while some of his picks will be up for debate (i.e. selecting Phillips) you can make sense of it and see how he's trying to balance the team.
Hopefully Bruce is watching and seeing how much of an idiot he was leaving Okay Yokuslu out of this team when we were bottom of the Championship. He was our best player in the Premier League when we were actually competitive and yet that fool didn't think he was good enough to get in a side bottom of the Championship. He's a Rolls Royce at this level and now he's had a few games to get his fitness up, we're seeing what we all knew he was capable of. The only one who couldn't see it was Steve Bruce.
We're not the finished article and would need reinforcements to have a chance at winning the playoffs IMO. Namely in both full back areas, centre midfield, winger and back up striker. But we have plenty to move on to free up funds - Reach, Livermore, Grant, Kelly etc. Maybe Mowatt would flourish in this side next to Yokuslu in the middle of the park? Wouldn't mind seeing him back and getting a chance.
Hopeful of another win against Reading and moving into the playoff places.
