Why not just put a goalie on the bench?
If you want an outfield player to perform a dual role you'd surely have to give him some practice? If what you really want is for him to be a centre back then surely you'd want him to devote all his time to it? Why would you create a player who is a part-time defender, part-time goalie, not good enough for a place as either?
We can't actually use five outfield subs. Wouldn't the ideal on the bench be 1 defender, 1 midfielder, 1 attacker, 1 multi-purpose player, 1 goalie? How hard can that be?
