I can't believe people are comparing Irvine to Pulis.
Irvine is a manager with no track record. Made poor decisions week in week out. Most
things he did were completely illogical.
Dropping Saido, playing all out defence without Yacob, no McAuley... The list goes on...
IMO, you can at least make sense of Pulis' decisions. Personally, I'd prefer Lescott at
centre half, because that's his position and I don't think Dawson is a Premier player.
But Pulis has probably identified that we're not defending set plays particularly well (QPR)
and given our lack of threat going forward, thought an extra big guy might increase our potency.
We did look like a threat from set plays today.
A lot of people seem to really rave about Pocognoli but I was completely unconvinced. I though
he made rash tackles, often in our box and wasn't very comfortable on the ball. While he does
offer more energy and gets forward better - he's weak in the air - so I can at least look at Pulis'
decision and make some logical sense out of it.
He's also identified that we move forward at a pedestrian pace, which is something we've
needed to address for a couple of years. Of course, you're only going to see an improvement
when we get the players in who are capable.
Don't get me wrong - it wasn't my personal preference, but I think the guy has a game plan
and reasons for his decisions - despite the scoreline, there were at least some decent signs today.
