A good bit of business.
A player proven at this level in a position we are desperate for.
Done early too. Hopefully the sign of things to come...
I'm not holding my breath yet as we did the same with Mowatt last year and not much followed. I do hope we address the positions that we've been desperate for since Bilic was here (namely right back and defensive midfield) as well as add a few more creative players too. But it's certainly a good start.
I agree with all you say about Swift, good signing, and swiftly captured (sorry).
You request a defensive midfielder, more creative players and a right back. I like the idea of a defensive midfielder and another creative player, who I would like to be Jed Wallace from Millwall.
But I disagree with the right back, I think we could sell Furlong, get a few funds to use later. I think he is overrated and I can see a club going for him with his long throw. We have Dara O’Shea who can be our no 1 there, Taylor GH can also play there if needed, and if we are going to provide opportunities for our youngsters, then we have Ethan Ingram who is a class 19 year old who was one of the best players of our premier league 2 cup winning side, we have Reece Hall, who at 18 has been playing for the under 23’s and Alex Williams who is 17, all 3 are right backs and all 3 are quality for their age.
Just my opinion!
My main desire for a right back is because I don't rate Darnel Furlong at all. I don't think he's a Championship player. Terrible passer. No composure.
In the Bilic promotion season, he showed a bit going forward but was terrible defensively and that's why him and O'Shea seemed to keep being chopped and changed without either of them ever really making the position their own. That's why I was gobsmacked we went into the Premier League season with Furlong as first choice despite him not nailing down the position in the Championship.
In the subsequent years his defending seems to have improved a bit but he now offers nothing going forward, despite operating at wing back last season.
I'd be chuffed if we could sell him, but I don't harbour any hope that anyone else would want him. Apart from the long throw, I don't see anything in him.
I agree that O'Shea is a better option, but I get the impression he prefers to play centre half. TGH is a far better player than Furlong, but I think he might need to mature a bit defensively if he's to play right back in a back 4. In the game against QPR, he didn't seem to know how to deal with aerial balls. Maybe with an extra few months of growth and a closed season behind him, he'll be fine to step up.
Not seen the young lads, so can't comment. But as long as Furlong isn't first choice again, I'll be relatively happy.
