Huddersfield Town welcome our neighbours Barnsley to the JSS on Saturday afternoon for a much anticipated FA Cup fourth round match. After making the Play Offs last season, the Reds have sunk to rock bottom of the Championship table this season, with only two wins to their name. Town by contrast, having struggled against relegation last season, have exceeded everybody's expectations to be 5th from top, following Wednesday night's home victory against Derby.

We drew in December at Oakwell, with Lewis O'Brien giving us the lead, before Carlton Morris equalised right on half time. That draw was the start of our unbeaten run, which in all competitions, now stands at eleven.

In the last round, we beat Premier League side Burnley at Turf Moor, coming from behind to win with goals from Josh Koroma and Matty Pearson. Barnsley had a topsy turvey encounter at home to League Two team Barrow. They were 2-0 up and cruising at half time, with Barrow down to ten men, but on the hour, it all kicked off. Firstly Ollie Banks, the son of former Town and Barnsley star, Ian Banks, scored a thunderbastard of a free kick, before Anthony Glennon levelled up. However Devante Cole scored another beauty to put the Tykes back in front, only for Barrow to go and equalise again. Morris put Barnsley back in front in the 88th minute to surely secure the victory, but no! Another player with Barnsley connections equalised in injury time. That was former junior player Josh Kay and that took the game into extra time. Only one more goal came and it was Carlton Morris who won it to finish the match at 5-4 to Barnsley.

So just like the previous round, there has to be a winner on the day, which could mean extra time and penalties. But what kind of line up will head coach Carlos Corberán pick for this one, bearing in mind we have a midweek match away at Preston coming up?

Well I reckon we'll see the new goalie, Jamal Blackman getting a game. Pipa probably, if he's fit enough after playing a good quarter of an hour on Wednesday night. And will birthday boy Jordan Rhodes get a start? Why not? Give Danny Ward a rest, he's earned it. And Carel Eiting? Oh yes!

For the first time since turning 60, I've got a cheap ticket. Not that I'm complaining. Our ticket prices are cheap enough for a season card and this getting in for a fiver is brilliant. Let's all get down there, get the place full and get the atmosphere rocking.

Head to Head



Town lead the head to head with 32 wins to Barnsley's 28, with 16 draws.

However, we have never beaten them in the FA Cup and this is the fourth time we have been drawn together.

The first meeting was in 1947 in the 3rd round. We were in the First Division and had been for years. They were a 2nd Division side and they got their first ever win at Leeds Road in a shock 4-3 scoreline. I don't have a record of their scorers but ours came from Albert Bateman and two from footballing legend Peter Doherty, one of the finest footballers of the time.

Our second FA Cup meeting was in 1961 and once more, we were the team with the superior league position and once more, we lost out. Town were in the 2nd Division and Barnsley were in the 3rd when we met at Leeds Road for a 4th round match. Town had just beaten the mighty Wolverhampton Wanderers side, 2-1 in a replay in front of a massive crowd, the first played under the new Leeds Road floodlights.

This match was also played under the floodlights on a Wednesday night with another massive crowd, 44,761 turning out for this one. Disappointment was the mood afterwards as a John Coddington penalty was all we had to shout about in a 1-1 draw. The mood would've improved slightly as Town beat Sunderland at home in a league match on the Saturday, but then we went to Oakwell on the Monday for the replay and lost it 0-1.

The third time we met in the FA Cup was in 1977. This was a 1st round match at Oakwell. We had Tom Johnston in his third and final stint as manager and both clubs were by now floundering in the depths of the 4th Division. Barnsley won it 1-0.

So three meetings and it's Barnsley who have progressed each time. Time then for us to change all that.

The WE Smith who scored on this date in 1910 wasn't the same WE Smith who played for us between 1920 and 22. This one was the first Billy Smith to play for Town, scoring 15 goals in 22 games in the Midland League. He later played for Stoke in the Southern League and had previously played for Bradford City in the First Division. The second Billy Smith was the famous one, the one called WH Smith (not the newsagent) and he is our record appearance maker. The third one was the WE Smith from 1920 to 1922 who only played 3 games for us.

Smith is a popular name. So is Brown. We have three Browns scoring on this date for Town. George Brown who scored in 1927 is our record goalscorer. Malcolm Brown who scored in 1983, holds the record for consecutive matches. And Izzy Brown, who scored against the BellEnders in 2017, holds the record for the most injuries in a career. 

Les Massie scored a hat trick against Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park on this day in 1966. Remarkably, that was his second hat trick against them in the same season as he scored three goals in the 6-0 win at Leeds Road. More remarkableness in that was that the other three goals in that game was also a hat trick. Alan Gilliver got that. So three hat tricks against the same opponent in one season. We only get one hat trick per decade these days.

In 2017, we beat Leeds. Any excuse to watch this again........
