January 24th:
On this day in 1981, we beat Rotherham United 1-0 at Leeds Road with a goal from Brian Stanton. Might not seem that significant at the time, but Rotherham were top of the league and would finish the season as 3rd Division champions. We were 4th at the time and would finish the season in the same place, just missing out on promotion. There were 16,687 specatators there for this one, which is well above average for the time. We almost doubled it in a fortnight's time when Barnsley were the visitors. More on that later.....
In 1976, we played Bolton Wanderers in the FA Cup 4th round at Leeds Road and there was a massive 27,894 people there for that one. They were managed by our old boss Ian Greaves, and in a drab game, which was a big let down for all those who were there for the first time in years, we lost it 0-1.
One of those spectators there that day was a Leeds fan mate of mine. I'd been moaning that my dad was unable to take me to this game and he said that he would go with me to this, if I went to watch Leeds play away at Liverpool with him next Saturday. Bloody hell! Liverpool v Leeds in the mid 70s! It was like a war zone!
Only time I've ever been spat on at a football match as well. Dirty Scouse bastards!
