January 15th:
Only got stuff already covered in the January the 15th down the ages on the match thread, but let's crack on anyway.....
The last match played on this date was in 2011 away at Walsall, in the Bescot Stadium. That's another ground I have never been to. Went to Fellows Park a few times.
Anyway, this was a 4-2 win, with Kevin Kilbane, Jamie McCombe, Peter Clarke and Jordan Rhodes scoring the goals. Did you go? What's the Bescot like?
I did go to the game in 1983 down at Exeter. Nearly didn't get there though. That was in the days when me and my mates went on the notorious Millbridge Bus. We always used to set off early doors and find a small town near to the destination and have a right good booze up! Can't recall where we went this time or even if we got there, because we were held up on route.
Some traffic cop with a grudge, stopped the bus, pulled us over onto the hard shoulder and accused one of us of throwing a beer can onto the M5. None of us had. The bloke was complete arsehole who, like most coppers back then, thought he could take liberties with football fans. He kept us on that hard shoulder for what must have been at least an hour. Nobody owned up to it, because there was nothing to own up to. How on earth do you throw a beer can from a coach anyway. Them bloody windows don't open. Prick!
Anyway, we did get there in time for a few bevvies after all. Nice little pub behind the away end. And what a cracker of a match it was. Can't remember how the scoring went but we won it 4-3 and our scorers were Mark Lillis, Phil Wilson, Brian Stanton and David Cowling.
Way back in 1930, we beat Bury at Leeds Road in a 3rd round FA Cup replay, with a hat trick from Scotland international and Wembley Wizard, Alex Jackson. That was the start of a run all the way to the Final. A famous Final against Herbert Chapman and his Arsenal team. Did we win it? Find out on the 26th of April.
