Gary Caldwell Update:
FORMER Scotland captain Gary Caldwell has been appointed Loans Coach at Manchester City after his interim spell as Newcastle United’s Under-23s boss ended.
The ex-Wigan, Chesterfield and Partick Thistle manager joined the Magpies on a short-term basis last month while an external recruitment process took place to find a permanent replacement for Chris Hogg. That appointment has not yet been made.
Caldwell, who was an Academy player at Newcastle between 1997 and 2001, last week tweeted: “Enjoyed immensely being back on the grass coaching at the club that gave me my start in football. Thank you to all the players and staff for making me feel so welcome.”
Joleon Lescott, who had been City’s Loans Manager for the last four years, has now left the club to become assistant (along with Ashley Cole) to Lee Carsley with England U21s. (A few rash tackles on the cards there then!)
Gareth Whalley is City’s other Loans Coach - a role he has held for a decade. (Gary the baby cuckoo will soon edge him out of the nest.)
Gary Caldwell spent only 3 WEEKS at Newcastle with their U-23s.
Recently the Newcastle U-23 squad was involved in a public brawl with friends of former keeper Steve Harper's son, so obviously they gained something under Gary's fatherly influence.
You may remember what a success Gary's loans were for Chesterfield, helping us to head straight out of the league! Possibly we might be able to tap him up for a couple of bright young things before he distributes them around the far-flung corners of Europe to learn football systems they'll find far too difficult to understand. After all he couldn't teach us how to play with a back three and everyone else seems to have managed it.
