Another of those TV howlers which we seem so capable of playing like turkeys, North End threw away two points last night with a rather inept performance in front of Natalie Sawyer and her TV crew. Poor Natalie has been submitted to two less than brilliant performances in the last 10 days both against teams playing in red.
Orient arrived at Deepdale not having lost there since 4/11/1995 when they were destroyed by a master class in a 4-0 win for the home side. They were one up as early as the fifth minute when Buchanan lost the ball near the centre line, Mooney picked up the ball and ambled towards the North End area with the North End defence retreating en masse, he picked his spot and scored past debutante keeper Johnstone. Things could only get better and the Whites piled forward with their new shoot on sight policy, what they were shooting it is a mystery because the ever so dodgy keeper Gary Woods didn't have a shot to save. Credit to the home side though they quickly sussed out that Orient could not defend set pieces, two corners had been only just cleared before a Gallagher free kick found the head of Beckford to level half way through the half. North End dominated as the shots rained high wide and not very handsome, Brownhill's shot on half time being a true epic missing by a good 30 feet.
Orient were there for the taking, they obviously thought we were there for the taking as they dominated the early stages, Johnstone saved well at his near post before a freak bounce nearly brought the visitors a goal. North End were now giving a Ray Wilkins passing masterclass, backwards, sideways when they did go forward Orient had plenty of defenders who dealt with crosses easily and shots were still going wide.
North End took the lead from the penalty spot after Reid was brought down, possibkly soft kick, Gallagher scored from 12 yards, he was by a country mile the best player for the home side.
Within 10 minutes Orient were level the impressive Dagnall fought his way through the non tackling defence to score there was possibly a touch of hand ball but was not given. Orient were not really troubled and the game ended with general unhappiness from the home side. Brizzle and Swindle could be 8 points in front of us by 5pm tonight.
Orient'smanager Fabio Liverani summed it up nicely by saying Il cani inerziale and you can't be fairer than that

Why should a man go to work, if he has the health and strength to stay in bed?
