After the Blackpool game I said relegation was inevitable with this set of lads but I just hope we're able to show some pride now...
I think we did that today. The lads tried hard and looked better. We even had a spell of pressure at the end of the game rather than lying down and dying.
But we're just desperately short of quality...
Even when we were level and looking steady, West Ham just had more of the ball and you knew we would crack eventually. Our defence doesn't have the quality to be under that much pressure constantly and that's what is happening week in and week out because our midfield doesn't have the legs or quality to engage the opposition high up the pitch. Snodgrass was a big improvement on Saturday and that became even more evident today, when we were given a reminder of our midfield without him. Gallagher tries hard, but is only developing. The other two look like they are plodding through treacle.
The lack of a striker also feels glaringly obvious and while Robbo does an excellent job, it just feels he should be playing off someone.
Saturday gave a glimmer of hope, but today has brought us back to reality. It felt like a game we needed to get something from to keep the momentum going, but when we saw the team without Snodgrass it quickly became apparent that we're not good enough. We now have a week until the next game so I really hope we're able to bring some more new blood in. We saw on Saturday what impact 1 experienced top level player can have, but we might as well not bother if we're not going to sign at least another 3 of them.
We did look better after going to 3 at the back at the end, but not sure if that was because we were better or simply because West Ham sat back and invited us on.
