Can't believe it's even remotely controversial to state that Gascoigne was at least the equal of Laurie in raw talent. Last night I sat and re-watched the full England vs Switzerland Euro 96 opener; first half, England building down the left, Gazza plays a perfectly-weighted one-touch rabona pass forty yards down the wing for McManaman to latch onto. Insane technique and execution. And it wasn't even one of his better performances.
You can't even say he was ahead of his time, because frankly, even the modern England players who have the ability to do stuff like that (e.g. Sterling, Dele Alli) either don't have the confidence, or get coached to play lower-risk percentage football instead. Which is just one of many reasons why England have traditionally struggled to sit at the top table of international footy.
