Easily the most naturally-gifted English midfielder of the era between Hoddle and Beckham, and he could have been as big a star as the latter if it wasn't for the constant injuries and his self-destructive streak. A few years ago I re-watched some full matches from Italia 90, and I'd actually forgotten how brilliant Gazza was on the ball during ordinary passages of play. It's a shame he never fulfilled his huge potential, but I don't begrudge people celebrating the flashes of brilliance he did give us.
