I think Mansfield largely cured me of it Salts. I used to enjoy "hating" them along with everyone else. Their every failure brought me joy. Then they failed so much they went out of the EFL and I hated it. I spent a whole chunk of that season rooting for them to stay up. There's no point having a rival who is no longer a rival; you need a very deep-seated hatred to be buoyed by watching your neighbour head towards what looks like his demise.
Unfortunately there seems to be a very strong streak of what I imagine to be Victorian methodism within the FA, which hates debt and disdains debtors. It has difficulty coming to terms with today's credit culture & a debt-laden world. I can see their point, but when probity comes into conflict with love, as an old hippie who is very much in search of his own hips these days, I'll still come out on the side of love. I can't help but be moved by Bolton fans cheering on their impossibly young team to hold out for a draw against another team torn out of the hands of its fans by senseless and uncaring capital.
