Dead and Bury'd

I wonder if that is the first time "schadenfreude" has been used on this site? I'm not sure the FA would understand the word, but they might adopt the emotion as a mission statement once they'd had it explained.

I like Bury. Their fans like Bolton's don't deserve what is happening, but we do all bear some responsibility for our clubs' propensity for self harm. We demand success and to get it we demand expenditure, I was as bad as anyone until in recent years Chesterfield's different travails have led me to scour lower-league information to propagate the notion that there is talent available for nothing or next to it which won't break the bank in wage demands either.

The FA is an outmoded and bureaucratic organisation which relies on the goodwill and good heart of ageing white men who genuinely love the game. The Premier League is almost its polar opposite. Its love for the game is outweighed by its love of money.

Unfortunately the FA's reaction to clubs in trouble like Bolton and Bury is not to throw the spare millions they've collected from Sky into shoring up the drowning clubs ....... because unlike the Premier League they haven't made those spare millions and yet are responsible for the whole future of the game in this country. So the FA's response to Bolton and Bury becomes more like waterboarding them. The FA are horrified by clubs in this situation and just step up their demands and, though it seems potentially helpful that they put off the inevitable for a couple of weeks, all they're really doing is pouring more water down the throats of drowning victims. Meanwhile Bury and Bolton splutter out the names of sometimes made-up potential benefactors who might just one day knock the door down pockets bulging to save them from their fate.

Unless in some way the Premier League and the FA come together to act in the best interests of all football in England, Bury and Bolton will just become minor footnotes, casualties in the fight to the death between big capital and what was invented as just a game. I take no joy in the potential demise of two fellow strugglers. What happens to us when Mr Allen dies? Do we become death duties? Will he bequeath us to a rather baffled niece in Buenos Aires?
