He’s only 21, came through the youth system with Karlsruhe as a centre midfielder and made his breakthrough in their relegation season. Then he moved on to Darmstadt where he’s become an important part of their 4231 system playing as the 10.
He finished last season playing as the left winger in the 4231, drifting around the pitch and cutting inside onto his right foot. He destroyed Hamburg in the second half in a match I watched in March when he moved to the left wing. He scored 2 great goals in that half. He plays with a lot of energy (was a box-to-box centre mid at Karlsruhe), always moving and trying to find space to get on the ball and create something. He is also rather small 5 ft 9 so can be bullied a little against taller and stronger teams but to combat that he can be moved to the left wing and freed up a bit.
For us I can imagine a fluid 3 of Phillips, Mehlem and Krovinović, a 3 that can rotate positions and be changed based on the opposition just like what Bilic had with Antonio, Payet and Lanzini at West Ham.
