Update from the Bean Bag

"Haydn Hollis became the Spireites’ first signing of what could potentially be a busy summer after a dozen of the squad departed the Proact at the end of last season.

Chief executive officer Graham Bean spoke to Spireites Digital about Chesterfield’s search for new players and began by stating that manager John Sheridan has identified potential transfer targets.

“John is very much his own man and he knows exactly who he wants,” he said.

“We do have targets. We will work towards getting the players that he actually wants, as opposed to listening to agents who are throwing a whole host of names at us.

“You have to let the manager identify the players that he wants to build the team in the way that he wants.

“Once he has identified the players, it comes to our side of the table and we’ll look at putting the deals together that will entice the player to come to the club.”

Hollis penned a one-year deal which was announced on Friday, after spending last campaign on loan with the Spireites.

Bean explained that he is confident of an increase in transfer activity over the next month or so, by explaining: “I’m expecting that over the next three or four weeks it will start to get really busy.

“The players are due back at the end of June and by that time I would think that John will have a number of players in.

“I’m sure they’ll be one or two who will be coming in right up to the start of the season.”
"

Now this worries me - even our club has noticed the disquiet that not only does nothing seem to be happening, but also that stuff is happening elsewhere. In the good old days you wouldn't have expected much to happen until May was out, but now the close season, like summer in Scotland according to Billy Connolly, is June. That's one month for Sheri to put down his glass and pick up his glasses.

If Sheri really has plans and targets why didn't HE say so himself? As Dancing says we DO currently look threadbare, but we would look less so IF Sheri were planning to introduce our own youngsters like Amantchi, Rawson, Sharman and Wakefield into the mix for starting berths in our line-up. Unfortunately I imagine we are all guessing that one at most of those names has a realistic chance of starting games for us. And that means we have plenty of spaces on the team sheet.
