Players can be booked for ungenitalmanly conduct - e.g. continuing to play/score after the ref blows his whistle for offside, kicking the ball into Row Z just to waste time, keeper takes too long to kick a dead ball back into play, etc., etc. Strange that the ref apparently can't stop play though when it's happening in a slightly different form right in front of his eyes.
Yes he has to be able to differentiate between a diver trying to take the piss and a genuine injury, however it was the bell end with the flag at Bellend Road that apparently saw the "punch" that floored Bamford and got the Villa player wrongly sent off.
