Looking at the stats for the managers you mention it becomes pretty obvious that the board are taking a massive gamble on appointing either of them.
Heckingbottom has only got a 34% win rate as a manager whilst Appleton is ahead on 39% win rate, neither of which is good enough to gain a top 4 finish in the SPFL.
When you compare their records to the man they are replacing it makes worrying reading.
Neil Lennon had a 48% win rate during his time at Easter Road with an overall 55% throughout his managerial career.
I can`t see either of them taking us anywhere but backwards.
