Sadly, we are now a second rate club.
People perceived us at one time to sit above the likes of the Leicester’s Brighton’s Watford’s, Bournemouth’s, Fulham’s of this world- even above those Dastardly Dingles.
Now, we are streets behind many of these clubs. Now, we can’t even seem to sign permanent younger players and have to rely on loanees and aged cast-offs presumably as we can’t afford anything else.
More than rather depressing especially, if we don’t get promotion, many of our senior players will be off.
Most senior players had a gentlemen's agreement they would stay and fight to get us promoted. But with the club not investing to replace the quality players we have already lost, they will be seriously considering better options (we lost Nyom, Evans, Rondon, McClean, Yacob, McAuley, Foster, Chadli) That's 8 1st team players who were in the PL last season. You could make a case to say Johnstone, Bartley, Townsend have come in, but it's clear we have not replaced a single player with one that is as good as one that has left. Any others we have are just loans or temp signings.
I'm greatful we have a good collection on youngsters, we will be relying on them more and more in the future. Darren will get more from our youngsters then anyone else possibly could, but he has to show a lot more faith in them. We are certainly at a crossroads.
Sadly without 2 or 3 quality signings I think promotion could be a step to far for us this season.
With the loanees's going at the seasons end Hoolahan. Mears, Myhill, Brunt, Mozza & Barry will also need to be replaced. With Jenkins declaring he has taken a loan and it will be repaid from the parachute money at the end of the season? we will have no funds for summer transfers.
Our team next year could have a very different look about it. Young, short of experience, but they should be able to run for 90 minutes.
It could end up being more exciting then this year, the roller coaster continues.
