I don't think there's anything surprising in the article, it's pretty much common sense.
We have several players in the squad that were purchased from Prem sides who would be on Premier League wages - Rodriguez, Livermore, Gibbs, Barry etc. Then you have players who have been here for years, but had massive pay rises when we were 'established' in the Premier League, such as Dawson, Brunt, Mozza.
All of these players are huge earners by Championship standards.Gibbs was on close to £100,000 per week when we signed him, even if he had a relegation clause, he's probably the division's highest earner.
Our loan like Gayle and Holgate will be on Premier League wages too.
It's fairly obvious this wouldn't be sustainable long term in the Championship. Peace operated the club the same way as Lai is operating it, so this situation wouldn't have been sustainable under Peace either.
In fact, if you think back to the relegation and subsequent promotion in the Mowbray era, the same thing happened then. It's almost a carbon copy of now. We were relegated and when we didn't get promoted in the first season (beaten in the playoff final) we has to sell big earners like of Curtis Davies, Kamara, Ellington Koumas etc.
Fortunately we were able to replace them with relative unknowns like Bednar, Koren, Dorrans and Teixeira and some affordable young talent - Brunt and Mozza, who actually turned out to be good. With this side we won the league.
And that's the big difference with the Peace and Lai administrations. While neither Peace or Lai are willing to put their hand into the their pocket, Peace was far better advised by the people around him. It doesn't *appear* that the people advising Lai have a clue. I hope I'm wrong, but that's my gut instinct based on some of the ridiculous decisions we have seen since he took over.
But there are massive similarities to that Mowbray era and if we do fail to get promoted, all of the above high earners will go and have to be replaced by cheaper players. However, I wouldn't hold my breath that we would be able to recruit as well as 2007/2008 given the people who make decisions at the club these days seem to be totally clueless.
