I remember playing in a good local team years ago when you were only allowed 1 sub, so competition for places was fierce. I was 1 of several young uns (..... yep) and it was always one of us who dropped out. We questioned this and so one of the other regular starters made way the following week. He was a very anonymous (we thought) midfielder.
There was a massive hole in the team, and we lost that game, which was very unusual.
The guy's value to the team wasn't obvious, until he wasn't playing; he was always there for the easy pass, never lost the ball even if most of his passes were short or obvious. He was a hugely important player, we learnt!
I suspect Jake Livermore is very similar.
