You are so right St Charles, I've just been saying the same myself in the local shop.
Unfortunately administrators love rules and paper work. If you approach a carpenter all his solutions involve woodwork and if you have an appointment with a surgeon the solution will see you on the operating table .... This is what you get with too much administation.
Really loans if they are to exist ought to be made in good faith, cover all competitions and permission to play against the club that owns their services. If you don't want to risk playing against your own player DON'T LOAN HIM OUT. As the loan market stands, a club of immense wealth could buy loads of players, loan them to all the teams in their division unlikely to be involved in the title race (in order to take points of their actual challengers) and avoid playing against those players themselves ...... effectively buying the title.
Football from amateur levels to the top is rule-bound. The petty and sly has always won out over the honest and excellent. Rules are administered because they exist and no one questions whether the game or the individuals/teams involved derive any benefit, but I'm afraid that is symptomatic of society at large.
Football, if it were less Victorian, could resolve such issues at a stroke. It might be salutary for the FA if MKD went on to win the Cup having been knocked out by a better team on the day in round two.
