Well as I put earlier in the thread, Sunderland never used him properly because of the over reliance on the wingers doing their defensive duty first and then attacking second and his loan moves to Fenerbahce (4 goals in 26) and Besiktas seem to have restarted his career. Both teams play forward thinking football and wingers generally excel better in that sort of style.
I personally don’t like to judge a winger solely by their goals though. Their overall play and final delivery is much more important than their goal record and Lens seems to have got it back on track in Turkey.
Matt Phillips for example has scored 2 in 30 and 4 in 27 in his past two league seasons yet during those two seasons, his wing play and final delivery was generally good so the goal record isn’t so important.
