We were fourth division. It was very hard to lose your league status at that time as the other clubs voted you out ...... which they were unwilling to do as next season they could be the ones struggling. You could just settle for being a poor team that was going nowhere. AND managers tended to last longer in those days. I imagine (can't remember) that McShane was a bright and rather affable man. His son was the year below me at Grammar School and he had no interest whatsoever in sport!
Too many managers get sacked too soon nowadays. I thought Roy McFarland did a good job with a small budget in L1. Lee Richardson did alright in L2 but he should have done better especially with the squad we had in L2 with the likes of Lester, Fletcher, Ward, Kerry etc. John Sheridan did a good job at getting us out of L2 and winning the JPT but struggled in L1 because we lost Tommy Lee and I remember Jack Lester did his arm in against Orient. Paul Cook spoilt Chesterfield fans especially with how we played, the team we had and with winning L2, making the JPT final and getting in the L1 playoffs. I don't know why we ever chose Dean Saunders as manager and that will always puzzle me. Danny Wilson did ok. Gary Caldwell was the wrong choice, I thought he came across too negative in his post-match interviews.
