German has had one start, all his other appearances have been as sub and rarely lasted 10 minutes. His start was under Danny and the thug ......... and he was pretty dreadful. He got booked and topped the foul count.
I don't think ANY recent manager has given youth much of a go. Sometimes we haven't had the youth, sometimes we have had a manager who is stuck in a rut. And once we had a manager who seemed mostly to manage without.
It seems to me we only ever offer a real chance to a player we think might make a higher level like Darikwa, Bowery, back to Davies and even as far as Ernie, Ernie, Ernie.
Somebody has to play in Division One and Two. We can't always recruit all those from players on their way down, or from clubs at the same level. Cookie did very well without introducing much youth, but you have to have a very good eye for a value player you are capable of improving. We should be thinking that if we work with this lad he can be a pro', but we only sit up and take notice if he starts doing a Joe Rowley and catching Everton's eye. We want players for us primarily and if they become too good for us - well hooray.
Many of our decisions on younger players look justified. Broadhead has never looked like making it, nor Onovwigun, Jake Beesley struggles for a game, Manny is not ripping the world apart yet BUT when you see Jacob Hazel scored yet another hat trick on Saturday you have to start to wonder how much other talent has been given just the odd game and discarded.
I think the point Matt is trying to make is that if you don't give players a run at first team football, they never EVER can become first players.
My opinion is that if we wanted Ricky German to be a Vanarama player at least next season then we should have been finding him a struggling Vanarama club for a loan this season or last. Stretch him, see what he can do or can't. What good is a player who can do well for Matlock to us? Unless we think that's the level we'll be playing at in three years.
