I've been lucky enough to follow the Albion since 1962 and I've seen a fair few great players in the stripes. Kevan, Astle, Robson, Johnston, Cunningham, Osborne, Wile, Statham, Gera, Phillips and many others. However, for me, one name shines above them all, the incomparable Cyrille Regis. As a player he had everything; pace, power and great skill and these three attributes alone make him stand out as a magnificent footballer. He had something more, however. At a time of appealing racial prejudice - both on and off the pitch - he showed himself as a man of huge dignity who ultimately belittled those who abused him by his refusal to be cowed by them. His answer to all this was simple: score goals, it was the best riposte going.
Cyrille, thank you for those wonderful goals that me and thousands of Albion fans everywhere will treasure but, most of all, thank you for providing us with a definition of dignity that football and society so frequently forgets.
Cyrille Regis, an absolute legend and my hero
