Don't think so, the ball was too quick. Looking at the video he loses sight of the striker over his shoulder, doesn't position himself quickly enough and is forced to try the outrageous clearance instead. If he'd stuck with his man he could have blocked the ball or the striker, or cleared it out for a throw-in, or even head it back to the keeper, perhaps.
Edit: Most likely given his lack of pace, he would have blocked the run, and the ball goes through for a throw-in.
