Trouble is I was brought up by a dad who'd have said if it sounds dodgy it almost certainly is. And if you're wondering if you can get away with it then you shouldn't be doing it.
Where business meets sport you can't be a bit corrupt without entirely destroying the ethics and point of sport. The whole point is to play fair and see who wins. Once you bend the rules out of shape or make finance more important than play on the field, you're lost. Business can't seem to help itself, the outskirts of criminality seem so attractive and profitable.
The whole of professional football is lost, it's just that some of it is deeper in the jungle than the rest. We seem trapped deep in the heart of darkness, we can't tell the lianas from the snakes and we don't know the way out, or the way ahead. And the guide we foolishly trusted turned out to be a gambler, a liar and a cheat. If it turns out he's going to pass us over to a new guide, why on earth would we trust him?
