Jeez, God knows where I found it on THAT website Matt - re-finding anything is fcunkn impossible. Things roll up as if recent that are months old. Maybe I dreamed it, but don't think so. It was something so bizarre to me I'd never imagined it.
As for playing - you should. And I meant what I said about getting involved in running local sport. Reliable people who can organise and are trustworthy are like hen's teeth. Especially if they are young enough and fit enough to play too - LIKE YOU.
A lot of what is wrong with the FA is that regionally it is packed with men even I'D think of as old. But in general, though they might be a bit stuck in the mud, they are people who have given up years of their life to a sport they love, and they'd absolutely welcome an energetic younger bloke. The older ones keep going because the younger ones are either not interested, or have young families clamouring for attention .........
Cricket - first step - find a club that's keen but not brilliant, that is going to have a few winter net sessions. Go along, tell them it's ages since you played and that you want to groove your bowling arm back in. And do it!
And football - surely there's local club that hasn't got so much as a website? Why not organise them one? You could do that and it would re-invigorate the place. Go along and watch a few games ..... sign on ....... they'll soon be short ......... run a line .......... anything, once you're there you are part of the furniture ....... even if you're shit at first, not having played much recently, you'll be valuable and you will soon find yourself improving.
I think your only real problem is a slight lack of self-confidence Matt! You'd be an absolute asset to local sport in any role. In a few years time you could even find it has become a career.
