For a start there's a difference between religion and race Pooch. Any race, any colour can be muslim. I don't like any religions. I used to have a soft spot for Buddhism, but it turned out to be a paddy field full of bodies in a village in Myanmar - quite how mindfulness fits into this scenario I don't know.
I could maybe convince you on FGM, because it isn't unique to Islam, occurs in many traditional societies alongside horrific things happening to boys at puberty. And gang rape, well there was a gang bang at the Grammar School just after I left - that seems more to do with being a chimp than a muslim. The dietary nonsense of religions and bizarre slaughter rules do just seem alien to my thinking. And oppression of women? That's how we see it. They are maintaining the natural order in their own eyes and women collude in it too, so I suppose you aren't oppressed if you don't want anything different ......... But women are worth far more than that in my eyes.
Why I'm not Islamophobic is that Muslims are more divided than the rest of us. They spend most of their time practising jihad on each other. Sunni and Shia cannot seem to co-exist. It seems the greatest concern of militants is to enforce their world view on their own people by any repressive methods available. And it seems they want to eschew for themselves and every fellow muslim the entertainments and pleasures of the modern world, whilst at the same time taking advantage of them.
Why you're different Blue is you can recognise within yourself prejudices and fears similar to those everyone of us experiences, and you can voice them and discuss them ........ Unconscious racists think everyone is like them and think that by voicing the view that racism is just harmless banter that they've given the matter some actual thought.
I can see why Islam frightens you. I'm sure many muslims can see that too and are horrified by what they see as a perversion of their core beliefs ..... They'd rather sit next to you at the Proact cheering a goal for the Spires than have you worrying that they might want to destroy you and everything you love.
