Our Season Starts Today
#3
I didn't comment yesterday because I didn't want to pour cold water on our last vestiges of hope. I didn't think just getting rid of GC would be enough to do it .............

When Dean Saunders was sacked he left behind many of the elements of a viable team if they were properly deployed. Very quickly Danny Wilson was able to get a 7-1 win out of a team that had been falling like a stone. Danny was not that much of a genius, Deano wasn't that much of an idiot and Shrewsbury were determined to help.

I'm afraid GC, with probably the best of intentions, last season ripped apart any vestiges of Danny's team before throwing together a team of failures, who had barely been introduced to one another, then this season built a new squad, with a way of playing in mind which, when he saw it in action, induced panic and he threw in a few random loanees in the hope of pulling everything together. So we have a very odd squad, which is also terminally not very good. We are weak all over the park.

To add to our problems we seem beset by small-mindedness. I can see the idea of getting O'Grady to work the centre backs for an hour or so and replacing him with Gozie Ugwu, but when you need a goal, having benched your most likely scorer, the thing to do, whatever has happened, whether you like the guy or not, even if you suspect he may be a secret serial killer, is to get him on the field. GC cast several players into outer darkness and here we see Dennis dropped into the pickle! We lost 1-0 and left our most likely scorer on the bench - that wouldn't even happen in a house match on the pitches up at Brookfield.

Of our players who have demonstrated any capacity for goalscoring - we left Dennis on the bench for the whole game, we gave Ugwu less than half an hour, Brewster having been resurrected after scoring four in a half in a midweek run-out was left keeping Dennis company and Ricky German is extending his stay at Alfreton (possibly to permanent, so any new manager can't get to see him?) DON'T WE WANT TO SCORE? When we read about efforts on goal a fair percentage seem to come from Sam Hird. Now that can't be right!

I don't object to O'Grady leading an attack and only scoring the odd goal himself, but I do object to our not having a plan to get other players onto the pitch who have shown some aptitude for scoring. It is quite a major aspect of the game!
