We've done this on DATM and I disagree with Cas and almost everyone on here. Ok I do agree that certain players from the clubs past orchestrated 3 titles and a FA Cup but honestly no one ever saw them play, so how the hell could anyone justifiably make a serious vote for Clem Stephenson or Vic Metcalfe? We're told they were legends but how good was football back in the 20's and 30's? It was only from maybe the 60's that football has become recognisable and players have developed into the better players they have nowadays. These guys are so remote in the past, I feel no affinity or anything with them.
I didn't vote but if I had have done I wouldn't have voted for any players from the clubs golden period and my vote probably would have been for the players who were selected.
I'm not so sure why everyone is getting worked up about this, its not as if they are having marble busts made of the selected players, its just a set of poxy flags. People were always going to vote for players who they have seen not some who played 70 years ago and is now dead and gone, they can't relate to them, they can to players they have seen. It seems to me people just wanted 14 players selected from the title years, legend means different things to different people.
As for Clarke, who seems the most controversial selection, he warmed to the fans through his commitment, no one is saying he was the best centra back we've ever had, I'd put Morrison, Lucketti and Monkou ahead of him and even Hudson in that respect but as I said it was his commitment, he captained the club to promotion and was a big part of the unbeaten run (which got us nowhere). If ever there was any doubt about Clarke's standing with the Town fans, you only have to remember the reception he got a couple of weeks ago when he returned for Blackpool.
