Joe Mayo was such a humble bloke and the crowd loved him for it.
He - and we - knew he wasn't the greatest. He completely missed a sitter one match at the Brummie Road End and fell flat on his face. Instead of groaning, the BRE just fell about laughing, and he got up and shrugged his shoulders to which we sang his name out loud and did so ever after!
And when Giles moved Len Cantello to left-back, Len wouldn't give up his no.4 shirt. (That was when shirt numbers reflected exactly where you played, 1 to 11). Nobody else would wear the no.3, but Joe put his hand up and claimed it! Most Centre Forwards (and he was about 6'2") wore the 9 shirt as a badge of honour, but not humble Joe!
