Spot on 4eva, the transfer windows are all about the media circus, agents and the money but they do give clubs a chance to improve at set times of the year, so I do prefer them to an all year round open market.
The only change I'd make is that the deadline closed 31st July so that it was all done by the start of the season in August, simply so that you start the season with the players you've got and that has to do you until the New Year. Theoretically, Matt Phillips could have a storming start to the season scoring 5 and setting up another 4 (I know, we don't score that many in 3 months), but then a top 6 side have an injury or a bad start and come with a £15m offer on August 31st. We either accept and don't have time to replace him or reject the offer - Matt Phillips wants to leave and goes into a sulk and downs tools.
Just using Phillips as an example, it could be anyone from the Premier outside of the top 6 or lower leagues, but it shouldn't be able to happen. The Summer window is far too long, and eventually leads to "deadline day" one big circus reporters at every ground and ultimately teams losing good players.
It just seems we've been linked or rumoured to be after all sorts of players since last season finished and that's part of the frustration that it's another 3 weeks before it ends. God knows what our first selection in September will look like, but it's got to be better to know what you've got to pick from around 2 weeks before the start of a season.
